Finding the right footwear!
Footwear is a combination of the shoe and the sock. They need to be considered together.
Firstly, the sock: there are lots of opinions though the most important one is the feet sweat a lot but need to stay dry to avoid blisters. Second, your socks need to be of strong material to withstand the friction. Third, they need to dry quickly. Our suggestion; quality wool or double layered socks.
Second, your shoe: if you’re buying new ones, wear your chosen socks to be sure you get the right size/shape of shoe. The Camino is a path that’s been walked for a thousand years by a few million pilgrims. So, its become mostly hard surfaces or gravel. Mountain/hiking boots are not recommended. Trekking/solid walking shoes are our suggestion and take a size slightly too big as feet swell, especially after some days walking. An open subject: should your shoes be waterproof or not. Our experience: most of the water that goes in your shoe is either sweat or rain running down your legs off your cape into your socks. And waterproof shoes wont stop this moisture and then a waterproof shoe takes longer to dry than non-waterproof. Finally, please walk a few days in your shoes to work them into form. If they don’t feel right, you may wish to change them before you get blisters on your Camino.
